The Chilean Exporters Association (Asoex) has presented to the government a series of proposals expressing the vision of the production and export sectors in the rebuilding of the country’s economy following one of the country’s biggest earthquakes.
According to SimFRUIT, the organisation is keen to focus on the central objective of reconstructing and reactivating the economic situation in Chile in an effort to overcome the negative employment effects generated by the 8.8-magnitude quake on 27 February.
In the document titled “Proposals for the Reconstruction of the Country”, which was compiled by Asoex in conjunction with the Permanent Bureau of Labour and Social Dialogue of the Fruit Sector, the association suggests the reconstruction process should aim to achieve more openness to foreign countries and greater political stability.
The text also proposes the establishment of an economy which promotes employment, investment and growth with low distortions and effective poverty reduction.
“We should favour the recruitment of workers in this coming winter, so young people and adults can be integrated into the companies to physical and psychological reconstruction of rural communities in the affected regions,” said Asoex chairman Ronald Bown in the document.
“The government’s concern should focus on creating a special status for agricultural workers and for temporary women workers, which is vital for the development of a modern and globally competitive industry,” added Mr Bown.
