Carrefour, Europe’s largest retailer, opened its second outlet in Xiamen, on China’s south east coast on 14 December - six years after opening its first in the city.

According to the What’s On Xiamen website, the store, which is based in the city’s Siming District, got off to a good start turning over US$225,000 by 7pm on its opening day, despite not advertising.

The new store, has the largest imported food section and red wine section of all the superstores in Xiamen. The store is also equipped with 1000 free parking spaces, reported the website.

Carrefour’s CEO Lars Olofsson said earlier in the year that Carrefour's market performance in China was a ‘bright spot’ and the company plans to open between 20 and 25 new outlets in the country each year.

The website reported that Carrefour intends to open 5 hypermarkets in Xiamen in the coming years.
