French multinational retailer Carrefour has announced its intention to establish operations in 30 new Chinese cities in the coming three years.
Carrefour is the world’s second-largest retailer by revenue and currently has more than 220 outlets in over 60 cities in China, according to the People’s Daily.
In March this year, the retailer announced the opening of its first hypermarket in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region as part of its plan to establish a strong presence in lower tier cities.
At present, China and Brazil are its two primary locations for expanding its operations, the details of which Carrefour’s chief executive has stated they will announce at the beginning of 2014.
“We are working on a strategy; these are big countries and there are lots of possibilities but I hope the plan will be ready by the beginning of next year,” Georges Plassat told the Financial Times.
