French apple grower-shipper Blue Whale expects its exports to Asia to rise by around 20 per cent this season compared to last, thanks to its merger with apple cooperative BVL and developing sales of new varieties later in the season.
Montauban-headquartered Blue Whale and Loire-based BVL inked a supply and marketing deal in March this year, agreeing to pool their resources and export combined apple yields under the Blue Whale brand.
The agreement will significantly boost Blue Whale apple volumes this year, guaranteeing a more regular supply of top-quality fruit for all markets for the entire season, said Blue Whale export manager Marc Peyres.
“Ten years ago we exported to Asia only during the first part of the season from August to December, and a few containers after Christmas time,” Peyres said. “Now we are able to export more varieties and supply until March/April, supplying good fruit in terms of quality and at competitive prices.”
Nascent sales of Blue Whale’s French Fuji, Joya, Pink Lady and later-bearing Granny Smith varieties to its Asian markets will also boost overall export volumes to the region this coming season, added Peyres.
