Signing of the MoU marks a new stage in the collaboration between China and Australia in the blueberry industry
On 26 November, during the 2024 China International Blueberry Conference, Berries Australia signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the China Chamber of Commerce of Import & Export of Foodstuffs, Native Produce & Animal By-Products (CFNA) to promote sustainable development, enhance industry capabilities, and foster trade relationships.
Zhang Jian, chairman and chief executive at Joy Wing Mau and chair of the Blueberry Committee of CFNA and Christian Parsons, COO at Costa Group, president of the Australian Blueberry Growers Association, director at Berries Australia, signed the MoU on behalf of both parties.
Meaghan Shaw, Australian consul-general in Chengdu, Deb Langford, minister counsellor (Agriculture) at the Australian Embassy, Cao Derong, president of CFNA, Jae Chun, Global VP and general manager of Driscoll’s Asia witnessed the signing ceremony.
The signing of the MoU marks a new stage in the collaboration between China and Australia in the blueberry industry. In accordance with the terms of the MoU, both parties have agreed to engage in extensive cooperation across a range of areas. In the field of sustainable agriculture, the two parties will exchange expertise in water management, soil health, and integrated pest management. In terms of industry and professional development, the two parties will facilitate exchange programmes, training workshops and seminars to enhance skills and knowledge within the berry industry.
Meanwhile, expertise in post-harvest handling, cold chain logistics and quality assurance will be shared to improve supply chain efficiency. Additionally, joint market studies will be conducted to better understand consumer preferences and trends in both countries.
“China is Australia’s largest trading partner. The signing of this MoU not only strengthens the cooperation between the two countries in the blueberry industry, but also lays a solid foundation for future mutual development and win-win outcomes,” said the CFNA in a statement.
“China is a very attractive market for Australian blueberries, with domestic production and consumption rate in China growing by double digits annually over recent years,” said Parsons.
“Berries Australia and CFNA have begun a strong collaboration, and this landmark agreement formally acknowledges this cooperative relationship, providing an official structure that outlines our mutual support and collaborative efforts. It embodies a joint vision for a sustainable, efficient, and consumer-focused future for the berry industry.
“By utilising each other’s sell industry knowledge and expertise, Berries Australia and CFNA are well-positioned to foster innovation and stimulate growth within the berry industry and achieve win-win development for the berry industries in both our countries,” Parsons added.
Blueberries, celebrated for their many health benefits, are becoming increasingly popular in the Chinese market. Chinese consumers have developed an affinity for the unique flavour profile of Australian blueberries. Berries Australia believes that access to the Chinese market will contribute to the growth of the category in China by ensuring consumers have a year-round supply of exceptional quality blueberries, resulting in mutual benefits for both Chinese and Australian blueberry growers.
