Metcash Food and Grocery has appointed Peter Pokorny as new GM of fresh foods to support independent retailers that work with the group.
The vast majority of these retailers operate under its IGA banner, with some 1,300 stores across the country,
Pokorny’s portfolio will include managing the fresh produce as well as meat, delicatessen, bakery, seafood and floral operations.
Pokorny left his consulting business to take on the new role on 29 April, bringing with him more than 35 years of retail experience in the fresh produce sector, having served in key produce management roles with Australian retail chains Coles Supermarkets and Woolworths, as well as with independent grocery chain Harris Farm Markets.
“I am very positive about the opportunities in the Australian marketplace for independents and I look forward to working with our store owners, my Metcash colleagues and our suppliers to deliver a customer-focused fresh offer,” said Pokorny.
Metcash’s latest strategy, Project Diamond, is part of a five-year corporate restructuring plan that was developed to support its independent storeowners with a focus on delivering a compelling fresh food offer to customers.
