Political unrest in Egypt

A vegetable plantation under development in southern Egypt for exports to Japan will be operational from next February.

The completion of the Kobe Bussan Co. site has been delayed for several years from the original schedule due to the need to relocate residents around the site, and also because of the political unrest in Egypt, the company said.

The firm, which is the operator of Gyomu Super discount supermarkets, expects shipments to Japan to commence in a few years.

The plantation, which is being developed on 3,000 hectare of land outside Luxor, will be the first agribusiness project by a Japanese company in Egypt.

The company started negotiations with local authorities in 2006, and completed a test plantation in 2011.
