Indian consumers in Pune are about to experience a new level of convenience in grocery shopping, as Amazon has just rolled out a pilot program stocking food items in the city.

Amazon has become the first foreign ecommerce firm to stock and sell food items direct to consumers in India.

Residents of Pune can now shop for food items on Amazon.in, sold under Amazon Retail India Pvt. Ltd.

A spokesperson told The Economic Times that it will take at least a quarter for the company to roll out ecommerce in food retailing nationwide.

Although the company is quiet on specific details, it mentioned that it’s on track to launch the food retail projects in India.

Last year, Amazon secured the Indian Government’s permission to invest US$500m in a venture to retail locally produced and packaged foods – both online and offline. This has made Amazon the only global entity to have applied for food-only retailing business, which was allowed by the government to help producers generate employment.
