Alibaba Group is set to deepen its reach into rural China. According to IGD Supply Chain Analysis, the e-commerce giant plans to invest in Huitongda Network, an online retailer that specialises in distribution into rural areas.

Huitongda markets products from over 80,000 franchised stores in rural areas, reaching some 200m consumers in 18 Chinese provinces. It also offers financial services and supply chain management.

The acquisition will compliment Alibaba-ownedRural Tabao, which offers rural customers the same selection of products and services as shoppers based in urban areas.
