Port of Rotterdam’s new system replaces previous PIN code-based terminal entry system, which was open to security breaches
Shipping line Ocean Network Express (ONE) has confirmed that all of its cargo shipments from the Far East and Oceania will be released and collected using the Port of Rotterdam’s Secure Chain system by the start of February 2025.
Its shipments from other deep-sea origins have already been added to the scheme, which restricts access to containers using a digital pass instead of a PIN code.
“The Secure Chain is a safe and reliable way to release and collect deep-sea containers in the Port of Rotterdam,” ONE said in a statement. “In the Secure Chain, the authorisation to collect a container is digitally transferred from one logistics party to the next, removing the PIN code procedure from the collection process entirely. The result is a closed logistics chain that is comprised solely of the authorised parties.”
Since rolling out the first three phases of its Secure Chain transition, the company said it was “100 per cent live” with all cargoes from South and Central America, North America, Africa, Middle East, India and Pakistan.
“The next phase will be to start transitioning all Far East and Oceania cargo and from 1 February 2025, PIN codes may no longer be given for all Far East cargo and Oceania,” it noted.
