Former Dole Food owner David Murdock has put his final acre of land on the Hawaiian island of Lanai up for sale, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The coastal property, which includes a villa, is understood to be on sale for US$17mn. In 2012, Murdock sold the rest of the island to Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison for US$300mn.

Lanai originally came under his ownership in the mid-1980s, when he bought the real estate company Castle & Cooke, which owned most of the island.

Dole Food merged with Total Produce in July 2021 to form Dole plc, the world’s largest fresh fruit and vegetable supplier.

That agreement came three years after Total Produce purchased a 45 per cent stake in its rival for US$300m.

At that point, Murdock remained chairman of Dole Food. However, following the merger, his stake in the now publicly traded Dole plc was substantially smaller.

Carl McCann, chairman of Total Produce, became chairman of Dole plc, while Rory Byrne, the CEO of Total Produce, assumed the role of CEO of the new company.
