However, production in the country remains under pressure from citrus greening, which is now said to be endemic

The USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service expects orange production in Costa Rica to recover from last season’s El Niño-affected downturn with a forecast increase of approximately 11 per cent to 250,000 tonnes in 2024/25.

Citing government sources, the organisation’s latest report on the sector also provided an update on citrus greening, which it said now affects “most production areas of the country” and has forced several smaller producers to leave the business.

Most of the commercial orange production in Costa Rica is sold for juice. Two companies, TicoFrut and Del Oro, control most of that production.

Most of the fruit is picked between January and May, with harvested volumes peaking in March-April.
