Eroski has become the first supermarket in Spain to introduce Apeel’s shelf-life extension technology to its produce range.
The retailer is now using the innovative plant-based coating to extend the shelf-life of its mandarins and oranges.
“This means they stay fresh and tasty for longer and we all waste less, making supply chains more sustainable, because by keeping them in good condition for longer, we reduce food waste throughout the chain, from producers, distributors and even at home,” Eroski said.
The coating is made from plant-derived materials (lipids and glycolipids) that exist in the peels, seeds, and pulp of all the fruits and vegetables.
It creates a protective layer that slows down water loss and penetration by oxygen – two main factors contributing to decay of fresh fruit and vegetable products.
