Makro Egypt, part of the German retail giant Metro Group, has backed a campaign encouraging consumers in the Middle Eastern country to buy only locally produced products by offering all of its fresh fruit and vegetables for sale at cost price.
The promotion lasted for two days – Friday 16 December and Saturday 17 December – and, according to the company, meant that Egyptians had the chance to buy 'the best-quality produce' at the 'lowest prices on the market'.
'Furthermore, to ensure that individuals have a chance to take part in this offer, Makro, Egypt's first and only self-service wholesale chain which deals exclusively with professionals, will also be allowing them to buy these cost price products only during these two days at the parking lots of its stores,' the company said in a statement.
Makro Egypt managing director Francois Oliver said: 'We have always seen the potential that Egypt and its economy has. To be able to do our part in supporting the growth of the economy at such a crucial time in Egyptian history, is really an honour.'
He added: 'Through our contracted farmers we will be selling fresh fruit and vegetable produce at cost price meaning that all of the produce will be sold at the exact prices it was produced for with absolutely no mark up on any of these goods'.
