Red kiwifruit has gone on sale in Italy for the very first time, with the arrival of Enza's EnzaRed fruit in Milan.
According to Murray Malone, development manager of New Zealand-based Turners & Growers, which owns Enza, the variety is being introduced to Italian consumers through Summerfruit, Enza's growing and marketing partner in the country.
He said that the fruit being sold in Italy was grown in China, but that successful trials of the variety had been completed in Italy.
The first commercial plantings are set to get underway in early 2012, Enza revealed, with over 200ha expected to be planted in Italy over time.
“Plantings in Italy will form part of Turners & Growers 12-month supply strategy that will see EnzaRed available in supermarkets year-round,' Malone said.
In New Zealand, Turners & Growers' EnzaRed kiwifruit orchards are reportedly set to reach commercial production in 2013.
