Publix, the leading food retailer in the US south-east, is reportedly to launch on 29 July a range of pre-packed children’s lunch meals, containing one or two servings of fresh fruits and/or vegetables.
The lunchboxes are designed to tap into the kids convenience meal business, following similar steps by other US retailers including Wal-Mart and Oscar Mayer, according to a report by Florida publication the Tampa Bay Online.
The range will be made in Publix’s in-store delis and comprises five different options, each reportedly costing US$3.99.
Options include the “Peanut Butter Apple Wrap”, with peanut butter and apple slices in a multi-grain wrap, string cheese, mini carrots, yogurt and a fruit drink, Tampa Bay Online said.
Another option is “Turkey Rolls” – an oven-roasted turkey sandwich on honey-wheat roll, served with a packet of raisins, apples and grapes, and organic white milk.
“These are quick, easy meals you can give your kids, but not feel bad about,” said Publix spokeswoman Shannon Patten. “They’re not fast food, or pre-packaged food.”
Publix officials were reported as saying nutrition was the driving factor in creating the new meals, and claim each meal has been approved by an in-house dietitian.
Moreover, Ms Patten said items in each meal cannot be swapped, meaning the overall nutritional level will meet certain guidelines.
