The Produce for Better health Foundation (PBH) has revealed that its Fruit & Veggies-More Matters logo is now appearing on Apple Dipper packaging at McDonald's restaurants in the US, available both as single packets or as part of a Happy Meal.
In order to carry the logo, food products must meet Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) nutrition guidelines for fat, fibre, sugar and sodium content, giving consumers an indication that a product is nutritious and encouraging them to eat more fresh produce for better health.
It marks a further collaboration between McDonald's and PBH, with the chain's entrée salad launch in 2007 promoted by PBH and Fruits & Veggies-More Matters.
'Featuring the Fruits & Veggies-More Matters logo on Happy Meal packages of McDonald's Apple Dippers will increase consumer impressions of the message and show kids that fruits and veggies can be fun,' said Elizabeth Pivonka, president and CEO of PBH. 'The Apple Dippers offer parents a nutritious choice for their kids as they look for a quick way to get lunch or dinner on the go.
'McDonald's restaurants have done a great job of offering more healthy fruits and vegetables on their menu, along with smaller sized menu items that are lower in calories,' she added.
The Fruits & Veggies-More Matters logo can now be found on nearly 2,000 different supermarket items in the US.
